candid conversations & solutions for hostility, micro-aggressions & gaslighting in the workplace

I’'m always asked by people, "What's the most significant story of your television news career?" Although we're taught that "we're not the story," the answer to that question is "my story." I never could've imagined that the honor of serving the community where I grew up would come to an end in such a horrific way. While battling triple negative breast cancer, the deadliest form for black women, I was also fighting workplace hostility, microaggressions, gaslighting, and discrimination. To say that I was exhausted is an understatement. I literally dropped the mic and walked off the job without warning on June 5, 2020, and filed a discrimination lawsuit against the station.

Join me as I speak with others who've endured similar challenges with the goal of raising awareness about workplace trauma; offering mental health solutions; and challenging the legal system to adequately address racism. With almost 100k views of my LinkedIn post about my case, this topic has struck a chord with millions of people who want equitable workplaces where they're valued, and the offenders are held accountable.

With legal receipts, I'm getting into some good trouble!

About

I’m a seven-time Emmy Award-winning journalist having spent 21 years as the main weekday evening anchor of the 5pm, 5:30pm, 6pm, 10pm and 11pm broadcasts at NBC WTHR in Indianapolis, Indiana. I’m honored to have won an Edward R. Murrow Award for the documentary series about the AIDS epidemic and the collaboration between Indiana University and the hospital in Eldoret, Kenya.

As a highly sought-after voiceover talent and model, my television career is expansive in front of and behind the camera. I’m a radio host on Alex & Andrea LIVE on Freedom 95 and brand ambassador for the Home Shopping Network (HSN) where I represent home decor companies including Clover by Jo, Emryn House, and Seasonal LLC. In addition to producing Gray Media's “Bury The Hatchet” on Peachtree TV, I’ve field-anchored worldwide and national events including the 2009 Presidential Inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama; 2002 Final Four in Atlanta; 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City; 2000 NBA Championships in Los Angeles; and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

I’m a well-known national event emcee and speaker, most notably about workplace hostility and discrimination after my personal experience in the television industry. I anchored my last newscast on June 5, 2020, after literally walking off the job without warning. I now speak about navigating environments that disrespect, mistreat, and marginalize women and people of color and the negative effects on their physical and mental health. As a result, I created and host the podcast “My Silence Is Not for Sale” which highlights the untold stories of people who have stood up to negative workplace environments and succeeded in reclaiming their lives. I’m currently writing two books including “My Silence Is Not for Sale: Candid Conversations & Solutions for Hostility, Microaggressions & Gaslighting in the Workplace,” and “Move over Hamster… There’s a New Sister in Town: A 10-step Guide to Reclaiming Your Soul and Indulging in Respite Now,” co-written with psychologis and therapist NaKaisha Tolbert Banks

I founded the production company Clover Lane Media, LLC in 2007 which was Emmy-nominated for its three-part PBS documentary Indiana Trailblazers that aired on WFYI. She served as the executive producer, researcher, and writer. It’s credited with having one of the last interviews with late Congressman John Lewis about the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Lewis was at a political rally with Bobby Kennedy in Indianapolis when they got word about the murder. Lewis’ speech that night is long remembered for keeping the city from widespread rioting that was occurring across the nation. I created and executive produced with Ancestry.com the documentary “It’s a Family Reunion: What’s Your Story?” This PBS special highlighted the history, traditions, and inspiring stories of families during their annual reunion, and a genealogical reveal that introduced them to new members that extend the family tree.

Clover Lane Media is currently producing the documentary “Who Killed Cary Owsley: A Mission for Justice” about the coverup of the 11-year-old murder of a black man in Columbus, Indiana. The company invested in the musical “MANDELA” about anti-apartheid and South African revolutionary leader Nelson Mandela. The highly anticipated musical debuted in London at the Young Vic Theatre in November 2022 with an expected 2024 tour on Broadway in New York City.

I’m also the co-owner of the curated beach accessory brand Manasota Moments which celebrates self-care and emotional and physical wellness. In January 2022, I published my first children’s book, “The Brightest Star,” about my father’s albinism which celebrates differences and encourages people of all ages to be kind to each other.

I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in April 2018. Thankfully in remission, I serve as a board member for Pink-4-Ever Ending Disparities which seeks to reduce breast cancer late-stage diagnosis and death rates for black women in Indianapolis. I’m also on the board of Morning Light which provides end-of-life care for financially insecure residents, and Indy Hygiene Hub that supports families with basic household needs.

I have a 16 year-old son and two Shih tzus with my husband Archie.

Better Than Best Life

During the three-year journey of healing from the traumatic work experience, I began to take intentional steps towards spiritual, physical, and emotional wellness. My main objective was to finally live the life I knew existed but felt it was always out of reach. My morning meditation, daily walks, and evening visits on the beach began to pay off in ways that have exponentially improved my overall outlook on life. I felt the return of joy, peace, abundance, prosperity, courage, fervor, and even fun. I began receiving compliments that I was aging in reverse. When people asked me how I was doing, I truthfully said that I was thriving and living my BETTER than best life. The saying was on repeat as I encouraged our listeners of the Alex & Andrea Live radio talk show to always seek and strive for wellness in all aspects of life! It’s my mantra, and now yours too!
